In today's news online is an article about an upcoming vote in the state of Nevada which will decriminalize marijuana possession, allowing adults 21 and over to possess up to one ounce at home without penalty. OK, without penalty from the state, anyhow, there are still those nasty feds to deal with. Adults would be allowed to purchase pot grown by state-regulated growers at state-regulated stores and would pay an excise tax for the privilege. If Question 7 actually passes, the resulting tax revenues would go to drug and alcohol abuse programs and to Nevada's general fund. The measure also increases the current penalties for some marijuana-related offenses not having to do with possession, such as providing pot to minors and driving under the influence. In essence, the bill would allow responsible adults to possess and smoke pot at home... responsibly... without fear of prosecution by local authorities. What a concept!
Legalizing marijuana possession up to one ounce for personal use is also on the ballot in Colorado next month. I won't go into all the pros and cons of pot decriminalization legislation. Anyone with a real interest can (and anyone who faces voting on such an issue this time around should, please) do a little openminded research in order to make a reasonably informed decision of their own.
I give two thumbs up to Question 7 in Nevada, and to the possession issue in Colorado. Unfortunately, since I don't live in either state, that's about all I can do.
hmmm...
